Secondo quanto riportato nell'autobiografia di Keith Richards, "Life", la canzone fu scritta per una sua ex-fidanzata, Linda Keith. Linda aveva iniziato a frequentare Jimi Hendrix, e per questo lasciò Richards, il quale fece di tutto per farle cambiare idea, preoccupato soprattutto del fatto che lei avesse incominciato a fare uso di sostanze stupefacenti. Keith Richards provò anche a rivolgersi ai genitori di Linda, mettendoli in guarda sulla brutta strada intrapresa dalla figlia. Fu così che il padre di Linda si recò a New York per riportarla a casa, grazie anche all'intervento del tribunale. Linda non prese bene questa cosa, accusando Keith Richards di averla tradita e per questo i due non si parlarono per diversi anni. Ma Linda, grazie all'intervento di Keith, oggi è ancora viva ed è riuscita a mettere su una famiglia, con la quale vive a New Orleans.
Recentemente "Ruby Tuesday" è stata inclusa nella raccolta di successi, "GRRR!", pubblicata dai Rolling Stones il 12 novembre, per celebrare i 50 anni di carriera della band londinese.
